The future of the Horton General Hospital

13 October 2009 update

On Tuesday 13 October 2009 the Better Healthcare Programme Board met to review progress and outlined the emerging models for retaining and developing services at the Horton General Hospital.

The Board agreed to further development and assessment of:

  • consultant delivered paediatrics and obstetrics service
  • single front door model for urgent care
  • sufficient activity at the Horton to sustain general surgery and trauma services
  • the above will now be considered by the PCT Board in November against the criteria of quality, accessibility and affordability.

It is expected that further work will be needed in gathering more information and evidence to demonstrate how these models will meet the above criteria.

Alan Webb, Director of Service Redesign at NHS Oxfordshire, commented: "Today marks an important stage in the development of proposals for retaining and developing services at the Horton General Hospital in Banbury. But we are not at the end of the journey yet, and there remains a great deal of hard work ahead to ensure the long term sustainability of services at the Horton."

Andrew Stevens, Director of Planning and Information, Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals said: "I am grateful to all those members of the public, staff and clinicians who have put so much work into progressing these ideas. The next steps are to see how workable some of these solutions are at the Horton General Hospital."

The Better Healthcare Programme Board is chaired by Sumit Biswas, a non-executive director of the PCT Board, and is accountable to the PCT Board.

The Better Healthcare Programme Board is accountable for:

  • delivery of the overall programme within agreed timescales;
  • ensuring the principles of the programme are upheld (such as openness and transparency and public and stakeholder involvement);
  • ensuring the key considerations are taken into account (such as access, safety and future health needs).
