Consultant profiles

John Salmon

John Salmon MD, FRCS, FRCOphth is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Oxford Eye Hospital and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Oxford. Before taking up this position he was Consultant Ophthalmologist at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town.

He was programme director for the Oxford Deanery for five years and lead clinician for three years. He has a particular interest in glaucoma and cataract surgery. He has published over 90 original papers and is the author of 'Glaucoma – a colour manual of diagnosis and therapy'. He has presented academic papers at national and international meetings and has lectured to audiences all over the world.

John Elston

John Elston is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Oxford, with sub specialty interests in paediatric ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology and ocular motility.

He is an Examiner, Final BM University of Oxford, Past President, European Strabismological Association, a Member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Training Committee and Oxford Deanery Regional Adviser and Programme Director.


Sue Hague

Sue Hague is a Consultant Ophthalmic and Oculoplastic Surgeon at the Oxford Eye Hospital, with special interests in ptosis and blepharoplasty, lacrimal surgery and reconstructive surgery.

She is a founder member of the British Oculoplastic Surgeons Society and also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.


Victor Chong

Victor Chong MD, FRCS, FRCOphth is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Clinical Senior Lecturer in Ophthalmology (University of Oxford) and Visiting Professor of Ophthalmology (University of Aston). 

He specialises in retinal vascular disorders, including diabetic eye diseases and retinal vascular occlusion, and provides laser and eye injections for these disorders.


Robert MacLaren

Professor Robert MacLaren is a practising Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Oxford Eye Hospital. He specialised first in Oxford and then moved to Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, where he was a Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon and led research into age-related macular degeneration.

He returned to Oxford as Professor of Ophthalmology in 2009 and currently leads a research team in the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology. He welcomes clinical referrals for patients requiring cataract surgery, retinal surgery and other treatments for retinal diseases.


Paul Rosen

Mr Paul Rosen FRCS FRCOphth is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Oxford Eye Hospital and was Head of Department from 1998 to 2004. His special interests are postgraduate teaching, cataract/refractive surgery, laser refractive surgery, vitreoretinal/trauma surgery and medico-legal reporting.

He is a senior lecturer at the University of Oxford, Visiting Ophthalmologist, Refractive Service Moorfields Eye Hospital, President, UK and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, Medical Editor of ‘Eurotimes’, a publication of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), Elected Council member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), an Honour Award recipient from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a Royal College of Ophthalmologists Examiner.


CK Patel

CK Patel is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Oxford Eye Hospital, with sub-specialties in retinal and cataract-refractive surgery.

Following undergraduate medical training at The London Hospital Medical College, Mr Patel had a broad-based training in centres of excellence in ophthalmology, including London, Oxford and Toronto.

He is a member of the British Medical Association, Royal College of Ophthalmologists, United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (UKISCRS) and the British and Eire Association of Vitreoretinal Surgeons (BEAVRS), and Section Editor of the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology.
