Our services

Books and e-books

We stock over 6000 printed books covering all aspects of medicine, clinical skills, health management, and study skills.

You may borrow up to eight items at a time. See Terms and conditions| for loan terms and overdue fines.

We also have access to many e-books, including many of the Oxford handbooks and textbooks and the 'Incredibly Easy' and 'Incredibly Visual' series via Athens login, which are all listed in our library catalogue.  Click on the title of the electronic book version, make sure that it is available to NHS or South Central and South West SHAs, and click on the link given (some e-books are purchased locally and only available to certain Trusts).  You will be asked to log in with Athens and then will be taken to the book.

The Royal Marsden manual is also available to ORH staff via the intranet (click on 'Online health resources' on the home page) with an OXNET login or remotely with an Athens login.

Journals

We take many print titles on a range of topics.

Current copies are not for loan, but back issues may be borrowed overnight.  We also have access to many more via the national core content collection of journals available in full text from any computer at work or at home via Athens password.

For print and e-journals please go to MyJournals at:

Login in with your Athens password, click on 'Books, Journals and Healthcare Databases', then choose 'MyJournals'. You can search for journals by title or browse the A-Z list.  Each title entry will indicate whether the journal is available in print or full text. For full text, click on the links given.  You may have to login in with your Athens password again in some cases.

The library will photocopy articles from the library stock and either e-mail them or post them to you.  Please fill in the document request form.

Inter-library loans

If we do not have what you need, we have access to a large regional library network as well as the British Library and BMA as part of our document delivery service, free of charge (up to 30 articles) or we may be willing to purchase copies of books for the library.

Enquiries

If you have a clinical question or information enquiry, do not hesitate to contact any member of the staff, who will do their best to answer it as soon as possible.

Literature searches and training

We will undertake any search for you to support your clinical needs, although students on placement will need to refer to their home library for in-depth literature searching or training.  If you need to do a literature search for your educational course, we are happy to assist you and offer a one-to-one training session at a time to suit you.  See our training page for training programmes including e-learning.

Computer facilities and copying

We have computers equipped with Microsoft Office, internet access and printing and scanning facilities. Printing costs 5p per A4 sheet. We also provide self-service copying for 5p per A4 sheet. You can also use our computers to access e-learning programmes.
