Clinical haematology

Referring via Choose & Book

Use Choose & Book for the following.

  • Routine patients should always be referred via the Choose & Book system. 
  • Urgent patients may either be referred through Choose & Book or via the 2 Week Wait.

2 Week Wait patients

2 Week Wait patients should be faxed to the 2 Week Wait Bureau to ensure they are booked into the appropriate clinic and as soon as possible.

Only patients with suspected haematological malignancy should be referred via the 2 Week Wait. It is usually appropriate to refer patients with chronic lymphoproliferative disease (chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, Waldenstrom's macroglobulinaemia etc.), myelodysplasia and myeloproliferative disease (polycythaemia vera, essential thrombocythaemia etc.) via Choose & Book.

Not applicable. If you are unsure if a consultation is essential the department is always happy to provide advice by phone (to the on-call Haematology Registrar on bleep 1836 via Switchboard), letter or email (to one of the consultants).


Common conditions

The Department of Clinical Haematology provides care for a variety of haematological conditions.
  • All haematological malignancies including myelodysplasia, myeloproliferative disease (polycythaemia vera, essential thrombocythaemia etc.) and chronic lymphoproliferative disorders (chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, Waldenstrom's macroglobulinaemia etc.).
  • Other causes of haematological problems.

Exclusions

  • Iron deficiency anaemia (usually initially referred to gastro/gyne as appropriate).
  • Pernicious anaemia.
