Children's services

The Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust provides general paediatric care – both hospital and community – for the children of Oxfordshire. We also provide a wide range of specialty services (tertiary care) for children from throughout the Thames Valley and beyond (for example Swindon and Northamptonshire). Services for those from further afield are provided for some specialties such as cleft lip and palate surgery and craniofacial surgery.

Paediatric services are largely provided by paediatricians with particular specialised interests, but who also provide the general paediatric service.  At the Horton General Hospital the paediatric service is provided by general paediatricians who work closely with community paediatric services.

Emergency services are provided at the John Radcliffe Hospital and the Horton General Hospital. The John Radcliffe has a dedicated Children’s Emergency Department.

The Children's Hospital in Oxford

Children's services in Oxford are based at the Children's Hospital on the John Radcliffe site in a purpose-built environment.

The Children's Hospital opened in 2007 and includes a spacious outpatient department, a children's radiology department and a paediatric assessment centre.

Children are treated there for a range of conditions including heart disease, chest disease, childhood cancer, neurological disorders and those requiring general or specialist surgery.

There is accommodation for parents| to stay overnight, either next to their child's bed or in a dedicated parent/carers' accommodation suite.

The hospital is devoted to the care of sick children, but with the resources of a large teaching hospital on site. Facilities from the atrium to the clinics and wards were designed specifically for the welfare of children and teenagers.

The integration of children's services offers many benefits for patients. For example, all children having major surgery are close to intensive care: parents of disabled children, who previously had to travel between three sites for regular appointments, now only have to visit one.

Half of the money for the £30 million hospital was raised by charitable donations.
