Paediatric Oncology and Haematology
The Paediatric Oncology and Haematology department diagnoses and treats malignancy in infants, children and young adults up to the age of 19. We are one of 21 principal treatment centres in the UK and take about 100 new patients from the Thames Valley region each year.
We have a large and dedicated team including:

lead cancer nurse for teenagers and young adults

community nurses
-
radiologists
-
surgeons (all specialties)
-
histopathologists
-
radiotherapists
-
access to all medical specialists including psychologists.
The service includes the following.

The diagnosis and treatment of all malignancies in children up to their 19th birthday.

Paramalignant conditions such as Langerhans' cell histiocytosis.

All non-malignant haematological conditions including:
-
haemoglobinopathies - sickle cell disease (SCD) and thalassaemia
(we have CPA-accredited laboratory facilities for accurate haemoglobinopathy diagnosis and are a designated centre for newborn screening)
-
aplastic anaemia
-
myelodysplasia and myeloproliferative disorders including chronic myeloid leukaemia
-
neonatal haematological problems
-
clotting abnormalities (haemostasis and thrombosis)
-
other benign haematological conditions (acute haemolysis, persistent neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, autoimmune haemolytic anaemias, congenital anaemia).
Neuro-oncology services are provided with the Neurosurgery Department in the West Wing of the John Radcliffe Hospital. Radiotherapy| is provided at the Churchill Hospital. Orthopaedic Support is provided at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre| (NOC).
We have excellent shared care links and run regular shared care clinics at:
Kamran's Ward has nine beds, including five isolation rooms overlooking the new giant artwork| in the Children's Hospital atrium.

Parents are welcome all the time, other visiting is very flexible, at parents' and nurses' discretion. There is space for a parent's bed next to each inpatient bed.
For families of inpatients there is a CLIC house five minutes from the Children's Hospital. This can provide accommodation for up to five families. The house has a kitchen, lounge, dining room and garden which all families are welcome to use.
The Day Unit, also in the Children's Hospital, was built with the unique needs of children in mind.
