Paediatric Surgery

The Department of Paediatric Surgery is the specialist referral centre for children in:

  • Oxfordshire
  • Buckinghamshire
  • Berkshire
  • Wiltshire
  • Northamptonshire
  • Gloucestershire. 

In an increasing number of fields, paediatric surgery is performed by specialist paediatric surgeons who work only with children, sometimes with help from their adult surgery colleagues. In other fields, the surgery is performed by adult surgeons with a particular interest in diseases where the majority of patients are children.

The department has specific expertise in a number of fields:

  • antenatal diagnosis and counselling
    expectant mothers carrying a baby with a congenital problem receive monitoring and assessment from obstetricians, specialists in foetal medicine, paediatric surgeons and neonatologists
  • neonatal surgery
  • paediatric urology
    reconstructive work and key-hole surgery on the renal tract and specialist interventions
  • minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgery
  • paediatric surgical oncology
    treatment for solid tumours in childhood
  • paediatric trauma
  • gastrointestinal surgery
    diagnostic and interventional endoscopy, surgery on a wide range of conditions, minimal access procedures.

The department works closely with other departments and with specialist orthopaedic surgeons from the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC)| to deliver safe paediatric orthopaedic surgery on both the John Radcliffe and NOC sites.
