Paediatric Rheumatology

We provide a general and specialist paediatric rheumatology service for the Thames Valley area (Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire) and neighbouring counties, including:

  • Northamptonshire
  • Hampshire
  • Wiltshire
  • Surrey
  • West Sussex.
The services we offer include:
  • management of acute, sub-acute, medium and long-term inflammatory joint disease (juvenile idiopathic arthritis), including joint replacement
  • management of chronic musculo-skeletal and soft tissue syndromes, aches and pains in the growing child, (e.g. anterior knee pain, hypermobility, sports injuries)
  • management of juvenile dermatomyositis and SLE, childhood vasculitis and other connective tissue diseases (including cytotoxic management)
  • management of autoinflammatory conditions (e.g. periodic fevers)
  • management of severe acute multi-system disease, including support on intensive care
  • transitional care for adolescents with inflammatory diseases
  • assessment of localised and generalised chronic pain syndromes
  • diagnosis and management of rare syndromes e.g. skeletal dysplasias (development abnormalities) 
  • assessment, prevention and management of osteoporosis (thinning of the bones) in children.

Paediatric rheumatology services are based in the Department of Rheumatology at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre |with close ties to the John Radcliffe.
