Gastrointestinal Services

Gastrointestinal Services (often referred to as GI Services), is concerned with the treatment of the digestive tract (or gut) and associated organs.

The digestive tract consists of the upper and lower GI tracts. The upper GI tract consists of the:

• mouth
• pharynx
• oesophagus
• stomach.

The lower GI tract comprises the intestines and anus.

Organs related to the GI tract are the liver, gall bladder and pancreas.

The specialties within GI Services are: 

• endoscopy
  an examination of the inside of the body using a thin, flexible tube that contains a light and a video camera
• gastroenterology
• hepatology
  treatment of the liver
• upper gastrointestinal surgery
• colorectal surgery
  surgery on the last section of the digestive system; the colon (large bowel) or rectum (back passage)
• hepatobiliary surgery
  surgery affecting the liver, bile ducts and gallbladder
• pelvic floor disorders
  common in men and women of all ages; they include incontinence and difficulty passing solids
• bowel cancer screening
