Working for Neurosciences

Contact us|

We are a regional specialty serving Oxfordshire and the surrounding counties. Patients come from all over the UK and abroad for specialist treatment.

The Neurosciences unit is a large acute ward divided into specific areas enabling patients to be cared for in the most appropriate environment. Both neurology and neurosurgery patients are admitted to the unit.

The ward is supported by various other Neuroscience departments, like Neuroradiology|, Neurophysiology|, Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit| and specialist nurses|.

Neurosciences offer a dynamic and progressive approach to nursing.

  • We are committed to delivering evidence-based practice, aiming to provide a high standard of nursing care.
  • We develop strategies to maximise the performance of individuals, drawing on the local expertise in education, training and research, direct access to the Neuroscience course and other practice-focused modules.
  • We maintain a positive learning environment where all nurses are encouraged to develop their knowledge and skills, ensuring that patients receive optimum care. Each nurse has a competency-based development package.
  • We provide a supportive environment that responds to individuals' needs. We offer both group and individual supervision.
  • We develop and motivate unqualified staff to enable them to work to their best potential.
  • We promote a practice framework for demonstrating quality and effectiveness of care.
  • We promote practices to ensure that the most appropriate practitioner delivers care in the most suitable environment. There are specialist nurses in movement disorders, pain, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and epilepsy, and three nurse practitioners.

The unit has a very well-developed team nursing system. Each team comprises a team leader, a group of staff nurses of varied experience, clinical support workers and a housekeeper. The teams rotate around the ward areas gaining experience and skills to care for specific groups of patients. This cohesive structure allows each individual's skills to be used within an environment that meets their development needs. The unit benefits from support and clinical practice review from a team of clinical practice development nurses and a lecturer practitioner.

We place a very high emphasis on professional development and education, in order to ensure that nurses are able to deliver a high standard of care. We encourage staff to contribute to the development of the unit and actively participate in development opportunities.
