Urology

Urology is a surgical service involving surgery of the urinary tract.

This comprises the kidneys, the ureters that connect the kidneys to the bladder, the  bladder, the prostate and other elements of the male and female genital tract.

Disorders of the urogenital tract account for many visits to GPs. Particularly associated with older people are conditions such as bladder dysfunction and prostate cancer.

Urology is closely related to renal| medicine and transplant| surgery, and also cancer services.

A large amount of the work in urology relates to tumours and tumour-related conditions that can occur in all parts of the urinary tract, but there are other diseases that require surgical intervention. The close relation between urology and transplant surgery means that some of the staff work in both departments.

The Urology Unit is based at the Churchill Hospital|.

From the new main entrance (Surgery and Diagnostics building), go up the main feature staircase and straight ahead into the link corridor.

At the end of the link corridor go past the League of Friends cafe and take the first right (named 'South Street').

At the end of South Street take a right turn and follow the corridor round to the left. Half way down is a sign giving directions to various departments: opposite this sign is a blue corridor sloping down. Both Urology departments are at the end of this corridor.

You can also get to the Urology Department from Car Park 2: it is down the path to the left hand side of Renal Outpatients (see Churchill Hospital site map).
