The Outpatient Department
The Outpatient Department is next to the Urology Ward. Doctors and nurses work alongside each other running clinics and providing advice for patients and professionals.
As well as the consultant-led clinics there are nurse-led clinics for:
-
pre-assessment
-
urodynamics
-
trial without catheter
-
intermittent self-catheterisation
-
bladder chemotherapy/immunotherapy
-
continence management
-
erectile dysfunction
-
bladder and prostate cancer follow-up.
Within the urology team we have a Clinical Specialist Nurse who attends clinics at the Horton General Hospital in Banbury on a couple of days each week.
Urology Ward
The ward has three teams of nurses, each led by a team leader. They support and assist the development of their team members, through appraisal, by devising individual development plans. The skill mix of each team comprises band 5 nurses, with an experienced health care assistant in each team. Most of the nurses rotate to night duty and have the opportunity to gain experience in the outpatient department if desired.
Surgery undertaken here is varied: our patient dependency ranges from those needing routine care to those undergoing radical bladder, prostate or renal surgery who require high dependency nursing skills. A team of consultants operates Monday to Friday. Emergencies are admitted directly to the unit or via the Emergency Department.
There is a wide range of learning and training opportunities available within the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals for nursing staff. The ward also provides placements for undergraduate nurses, return to nursing students and the health care assistant apprenticeship scheme.
We are fortunate that our nurses come from many areas around the world, which allows the contribution of new ideas and approaches to care, and helps us to enjoy a varied social life too.
