Working for Dermatology

The Department of Dermatology is a friendly department which treats patients from Oxford and the surrounding areas with skin problems. There are several specialist areas of the service, which include surgery, wound healing, laser therapy, phototherapy and general dermatology.

This is a progressive department committed to the development of nursing staff to achieve excellence in their work. There are a number of examples where nurse-led services are established and fully supported by the dermatology consultants.

The department is open from Monday to Friday and will see in excess of 31,000 patients a year. In addition to the outpatient work, there are two dedicated inpatient beds for dermatology patients located on the John Warin Ward.

There is strong support for the dermatology in patients from both the Dermatology Department and the Geoffrey Harris Ward staff. Wound Healing in particular have strong links with the ward and participate in the training and development of staff caring for the inpatients.

Our dermatology doctors each have a specialist area of interest and encourage our nurses to develop new skills and take on an enhanced role within the department. Nurses with surgical skills routinely carry out minor surgery, whilst others manage patients with skin care needs within the nurse-led services.

There is a strong commitment to education, with an ongoing programme of development and training opportunities.
