Clinical Immunology

Failure of the immune system, or 'immunodeficiency', leads to recurrent or persistent infections, while an over-zealous immune system leads to autoimmune disease (so-called 'friendly fire') or allergy.

The Clinical Immunology Department provides a wide-ranging service for patients with immune deficiency, allergy and autoimmune disease as part of the Nuffield Department of Medicine's specialist clinic.

Many of our patients cannot produce their own protective antibodies. Such patients are treated with regular infusions of antibodies, or 'immunoglobulins', and have the option of treating themselves at home following appropriate training.
