Thrombo Embolus Deterrent stockings
Information about Thrombo Embolus Deterrent stockings (TEDs) for patients on admission.
You will be asked to wear TED stockings on admission to the Unit.
-
What are TED stockings?
TED stockings are designed to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which is the development of blood clots in the legs.
-
What are the complications of developing a clot?
The clot may cause problems with circulation in your leg or become dislodged into the general blood stream, which may lead to complications in the heart, lungs and brain.
-
Why am I at increased risk of developing this?
You are likely to be less mobile in whilst in hospital due to increased pain or surgery.
-
Can I put them on and remove them myself?
We would encourage you to do so but if you are unable to, please ask your nurse to help you.
-
How long will I need to wear them?
For the duration of your stay in hospital.
-
How often will they be changed?
They will be changed every three days. Obviously they need to be temporarily removed for bathing.
-
What will happen if I refuse to wear them?
You will not be forced to wear them, however, they have been proven to be of great benefit in reducing the amount of patients developing DVT in their legs. If you have any further questions please feel free to ask your nurse.
