Vascular surgery

The Vascular Surgical Service provides emergency and elective treatment for patients with conditions of the vascular system, excluding the cardiac system. These conditions include life-threatening emergencies such as dissecting aortic aneurysms (an abnormal dilation or ballooning of an artery caused by the pressure of blood flowing through the area) and less severe conditions such as varicose veins.

The vascular surgical service operates a dedicated ward for the care of vascular patients on Ward 6A at the John Radcliffe Hospital|. Minor routine elective vascular surgery is provided from the Horton Day Case Unit| and the Churchill Day Surgery Unit.

Many vascular conditions can now be treated in a less invasive manner, using interventional radiology. Surgery is still required for the more complex conditions however.
