Physiological measurements

Lung function measurements

A technician attends the Chest Unit one day per week to perform lung function measurements on NHS patients. These include spirometric measurements (FEV, FVC and peak flow), body plethysmography (IC, VC, FRC, Raw, flow-volume curves) and transfer factor measurements. In addition, lung function measurements are performed for the Children's Clinical Centre.

Sleep studies

These are performed for children with sleep apnoea or other sleep abnormalities, and may take place in hospital or in the patient's home.

Sweat testing

These tests are carried out for children suspected of having Cystic Fibrosis.

Spinal cord monitoring for patients undergoing scoliosis surgery or surgery for spinal injuries

This is a vital service to prevent damage to the spinal cord during this surgery.

Evoked potential monitoring for patients in the ITU to assist with diagnosis

Intracranial pressure monitoring
