Heart Centre open day

Journalists were offered a sneak preview of the Oxford Heart Centre on Tuesday 1 September 2009. They were invited for a tour before staff and patients move in later in the Autumn.
Doctors, nurses and patients were on hand to explain what this new facility means for them and the thousands of other patients across the region that will be treated there in the future.
The £29 million Heart Centre is housed in a five-storey building, along with some re-configuration of the existing three-storey space. As a regional referral centre of excellence, a wide range of surgical and medical services is available, including:

coronary intervention
-
heart surgery
-
arrhythmia treatment
-
state-of-the-art imaging
-
basic science research into understanding heart disease and genetics research into causes and cures
-
24/7 heart attack centre
-
innovations in treatments, such as transcutaneous aortic valves and drug eluting stents
-
medical and non-medical teaching.
Facilities in the new centre will be greatly improved for staff and patients. They include:
-
five catheter labs, for diagnosing and treating heart problems, and for monitoring patients undergoing cardiology treatment

a recovery unit with 5 beds, including a paediatric recovery area for child heart patients

50 single rooms for patients over two wards
-
19 intensive care and high-dependency beds for cardiac patients
-
16 day patient beds
-
10 coronary care unit beds
-
new facilities for staff
-
dedicated space for medical teaching, and for research into new treatments for heart disease.
