Footballer's heartfelt thanks
14 December 2009
Former Oxford United player, Steve Tavinor, thanked everyone at the John Radcliffe Hospital who helped save his leg, and his life, after an accident at work left him seriously injured.
Steve, 35, from Wood Farm, Oxford, was crushed between a car and his lorry in Steeple Aston as he unloaded scaffolding at the end of September 2009. He was flown by Chiltern and Thames Valley Air Ambulance paramedics to the John Radcliffe after being cut free by firefighters following the accident.
Over 40 staff, three operations and many, many hours of therapy at the John Radcliffe helped Steve get back on his feet. He said, "I'll never play football again, but that's a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things. I'm happy I've still got my leg – but I don't think it's all sunk in yet."
Steve recovered at home with a district nurse visiting him regularly to dress his wounds. He said he wanted to thank everyone who helped in his treatment and ongoing recovery as the team effort had been 'unbelievable'. Steve said: "It's brilliant. I can't say enough about them. They've all done a fantastic job. So many people have been involved and I still have more operations and 14 months of rehabilitation to come. I owe them all a lot."
