Heart doctor to run seven marathons in seven days
24 September 2010
Doctors are often called superheroes by their grateful patients, but cardiologist Dr Tim Betts might just be the real thing.
The consultant, who specialises in the investigation and treatment of heart rhythm disorders|, is setting off in Autumn 2010 to run seven marathons in just seven days. He is running coast to coast across the hills of the Wainwright route – all 190 miles of it – in aid of the Oxford Heart Centre Campaign.
He explains: "This is a once in a lifetime experience – I really don't think I'll ever be stupid enough to try anything so mad again. But I'm very proud of what the Oxford Heart Centre| already offers and wanted to do something equally outstanding to help contribute to the development of a world-class facility."
Tim is running with his friend, Iain Rock, carrying their water, provisions, wet weather gear, maps and first aid kit in back packs. It's one of the biggest challenges the fundraising team has seen, so we are hoping people will dig deep and help Tim reach his goal of raising £5,000.
Dr Betts isn't the only member of the team getting behind the campaign. Tony Roberts works in cardiac IT support. Knowing his 25 stone weight was putting his own heart at risk, he has started a sponsored slim. Tony is hoping that as the pounds drop off him they will tot up on his fundraising page.
If you've been inspired by what the Heart Centre staff are doing, why not show your support and sign up for It's Not Just a Walk in the Park on 17 October 2010, or create your own fundraising event in February, our 'Put Your Heart Into It' month.
