Baby Café open at the John Radcliffe Hospital

17 January 2011

The first Baby Café based in a hospital was launched at the Women’s Centre, John Radcliffe Hospital on Wednesday 5 January 2011.

Mums and babies, volunteers and staff gathered to celebrate the launch.

This Baby Café is unique in the UK as it provides support for breastfeeding mums and their partners before they leave hospital. The service is run by midwife Lisa Clayden and supported by volunteers who have been trained in breastfeeding peer support.

Drop-in sessions will be run every Wednesday morning for inpatients.

Lisa Clayden said: "Baby Cafés offer mums and their partners a friendly and supportive atmosphere to learn and talk about breastfeeding. By setting up a café in the hospital we can give mums a good start before they leave and put them on the road to successful breastfeeding".

There are 11 other Baby Cafés across Oxfordshire based in the community. This currently includes the Oxford Baby Café Bus, which provides a service to a number of different children's centres across the county.

The Baby Café is part of The Baby Café Charitable Trust, a national network of Baby Café drop-ins,  which support breastfeeding mothers, and provide information about breastfeeding to pregnant women and their families.
