Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals and the University of Oxford are holding a joint public open day at the new Cancer Centre. The day will comprise unique access to areas normally off-limits to the public, interactive and fun science exhibitions and open talks by experts about cancer care, latest research and what really happens behind the scenes.
Date: Saturday 21 November, any time from 11.00am - 3.00pm.
Location: Cancer Centre, Churchill Hospital and the University Green Building on the Old Road campus (opposite and within walking distance of the Churchill Hospital).
The doors will open to back room areas that are normally off-limits to the public, including the theatres and high-tech cancer equipment. In addition, there will be plenty of interactive stalls and exhibitions along with specialist talks by the experts on different aspects of cancer care.
The aim of the day is to show what really happens when delivering cancer care. From how research is carried out and then translated into treatments at the bedside, to showing a real patient journey, from initial scans to treatment plans. Different aspects of cancer care will be shown, from de-mystifying treatments such as radiology to showing the latest in state-of-the-art cancer technology, such as the surgical robot that allows surgeons to carry out precision surgery remotely, via robotic 'arms'.
The day is suitable for all ages, including young children, with plenty of activities to keep young and old entertained. There is no need to book.
Free parking is available on the Churchill site (with the exception of the barrier-controlled car parks) and at the University Green Building.
