Staff in the John Radcliffe Emergency Department celebrate International Nurses Day
Nurses don't often get time to think about the difference they make – they are too busy getting on with it. On 12 May, International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birthday, to mark the contributions nurses make to society.
In the John Radcliffe Hospital Emergency Department and Kamran's Ward in the Oxford Children's Hospital, nurses marked the occasion with a 'thank you' tree and cake for them all to share.
"Our nurses are fantastic, but they don't see themselves as remarkable because it’s their day job," said Louise Rawlinson, Matron for Emergency Medicine. "They all work together as a team to make sure we provide the best possible care for patients, even in often very high pressure situations. It's great to have a day to celebrate their hard work."
Angela Houlston, Matron for Children, bought Florence Nightingale cakes, to remember the work of 'The Lady with the Lamp' herself. She said, "Florence Nightingale is a lasting example of compassion and commitment to patient care. It's a fantastic day to recognise the dedication our nurses show and to recognise the contribution each person brings to the team."
