Trauma team
The John Radcliffe Hospital has one of the best trauma departments in the country. In January 2009 Professor Keith Willett from the John Radcliffe was appointed National Clinical Director for Trauma Care, or 'Trauma Tsar'|.
Service development staff, led by Clinical Fellow Imran Anwar, spent a week in the operating theatres looking at the processes and timings involved in surgery. With the support of the clinical staff they were then able to identify areas where improvements could be made. For example, when theatre lists started late in the morning there were frustrating delays for patients and staff. The team brought in simple but effective changes, including:
-
daily trauma meetings for anaesthetic staff
-
ensuring that the first case of the day is sent for at a precise and consistent time
-
asking theatres to call the ward before sending for patients, to allow them time to prepare the patient and documentation.
